Adolescent Literature is a graduate level class designed for pre-service and in-service teachers. Students will read different genres of Young Adult literature with an emphasis on contemporary and diverse authors. We will also read research on Young Adult literature and literary theory, as well as research on teaching adolescents reading and writing through the use of Young Adult literature. The focus will be on integrating theory and practice in the teaching and reading of Young Adult literature. We will explore the ways that adolescent literature can be used across the curriculum to address issues of social justice, identity, and diversity. We will also explore the historical, economic, cultural, and socio-political contexts of the texts we read.
