Description and analysis of the grammatical system of Attic Greek of the 5th century B.C. Emphasis on the mastery of the grammatical system and the development of reading skills, with background on Attic society and culture of the 5th century B.C.
In this course, we will read at least one entire work of Sophocles (e.g. the "Antigone") in the original Greek, emphasizing large quantities of prepared reading as well as sight-translation and discussion of literary and cultural topics.
Survey of vocabulary, grammatical structure, and dialectical variations from Attic Greek. Historical background from the Classical period. Readings from Herodotus and Demosthenes. Prerequisite: GREEK 242 or equivalent. (Gen.Ed. AL)
